About Us
Millery: A Family Heritage
Château de Millery has been owned by the Manoncourts since 1942 : first by Thierry Manoncourt, and now by his daughter, Blandine de Brier Manoncourt. The origins of this estate date back to World War II, when Thierry Manoncourt was a prisoner of war for several years. Anxiously awaiting his return, his mother decided to use his officer’s pay to purchase this very well-located plot on the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion. It was truly an act of faith in the future.
Upon his return from war in 1947, Thierry Manoncourt, an agronomist by training, immediately recognized the potential of Millery’s terroir. He perceived that this small vineyard had a unique character, and believed it deserved special attention. He thereafter dedicated himself to its development, applying his knowledge to reveal its full richness. Meticulous in every detail, he even designed the wine label – a design both understated and elegant, which has endured through the decades and remains the emblem of the estate today.
For many years, Millery remained Thierry Manoncourt’s secret garden and its wines were reserved for family and close friends. It remains today a confidential cuvée.
Covering just 0.8 hectares, the vineyard is cultivated with the same rigor and philosophy as at Château-Figeac. Faithful to the values instilled by Thierry Manoncourt, the property embraces a sustainable viticultural approach, incorporating bio-control methods to preserve the natural balance of the vineyard. Each vine is tended with meticulous care, and each intervention is carefully considered to maintain soil harmony and enhance the pure expression of the terroir. This approach – at the crossroads of tradition and innovation – brings out the full finesse and complexity of this viticultural gem, ensuring the enduring quality and excellence of Château de Millery.
